Alberta produces some of the most sought-after barley in the world due to its ideal growing conditions. There has to be the right amount of daylight and frost-free days, and the right soil conditions.
Alberta’s climate is just right to produce malt quality barley – especially right along the Highway 2 corridor through Central Alberta. This has led to the province producing about half of all Canadian barley, and about a third of all barley in North America. Combining this top-quality barley with the exceptional craftsmanship of malting and brewing, Alberta has the ingredients to produce some of the best beer in the world!
Since craft beer uses 3-4x more barley than macro, let’s raise a pint of craft beer on Canadian Beer Day and cheers the barley breeders, farmers, maltsters, brewers and everyone in between that makes it all possible!
